Cooperativa accordions were founded in 1921 in the Italian town of Vercelli. They began as a partnership between local accordion makers under the name of “Coope Armoniche”.

Through their shared expertise, this group of highly skilled artisans soon became renowned for their production of high quality chromatic and piano accordions, as well as the “Musette” tuning, which is now popular worldwide for its unique tone.

In the 1940s, many of the accordion factories that had been operating in Vercelli were forced to close. This was due to the lack of demand for instruments in the struggling financial markets of war-torn Europe. The only company to survive this difficult period was Coope Armoniche, with just three workers.

The production of accordions continued on a relatively small scale under the brand name “Cooperativa” for another 35 years or so. Then, in 1981, under the leadership of Pancrazio Aichino and Emiliana Roviaro, a large number of young people from the local area were trained in the art of accordion manufacture. Over the course of the next few years these young workers were transformed into skilled craftsmen.

During this time, there was also a revival in the worldwide accordion market. With a fresh demand for top quality handcrafted instruments, Cooperativa then launched a new range of products.

Shortly after, the company experienced a re-structure. The decision was made to resume exporting products under the original name of Cooperativa, whilst using the new brand of Cooperafisa for the domestic Italian market.

Today, Cooperativa produces professional and high quality instruments that respect the heritage and traditional production techniques of their forefathers, whilst still embracing the latest technology. This makes Cooperativa the choice of many of today’s top professional players.

All Cooperativa accordions are still individually handcrafted in Vercelli, and the collection ranges from traditional styled 120 bass double cassotto accordions, to modern, ultra lightweight designs such as the patented “Super Ballo” extended keyboard system. Cooperativa also produce custom built accordions, designed and crafted to each customer’s own specifications and demands.
